Had High Hopes

First, the Kasasa Checking account that allows me to earn 2.5% interest (as long as I meet certain criteria) - EVERY bank/credit union should be doing this. Much better than the paltry rates earned at other banks.

That said, I've had a number of challenges with this credit union that will leave me looking elsewhere very soon.

1. Customer Service has not been good. I often find that my questions aren't answered satisfactorily, or (more often) information is completely left out. In the case of a very small car loan, the individuals I dealt with left out lots of information about the process and what was needed to complete the loan. On the day of closing the loan, I was still getting requests for information 2 hours before I was supposed to be at the bank! People work for a living, and I didn't leave with the impression that they respect that. Additionally, I was never told the payment would be drafted directly from my account. I only discovered this recently. Though I have excellent credit and a proven track record for managing debt, I was never given any option regarding repayment of the loan - they set up an automatic draft and neither told me during the loan signing, nor sent notice afterward. I've been waiting on payment coupons/statements. Called the credit union - there are none. No one communicated any of this.

2. Web/Mobile Banking - this is an absolutely abysmal experience. The only good thing I can say about it is that they offer it, which is like saying the good thing about a person is that they breathe. Everything from the login process (I've been automatically locked out on multiple occasions, for seemingly no reason at all, and they can't tell me why, nor do they know whether or where there were other login attempts from someone else) to the online bill pay experience (looks like its run through a separate service, and launches in a different web page) is just poorly executed. Other times I've been locked out on only my phone, for no reason at all, only to have it work later (computer/web was fine). And secondly, the phone app is terrible. It is basically the web page, but in smaller format. Since they insist on launching everything in a new browser window (the app is not a browser with tabs or windows though), some features indicate they are available on the phone, but they actually aren't. And to alleviate concerns that this is user error, I can assure you it is not - I've been in IT over 15 years. It is purely poor mobile application design, AND poor web design.

Also, related to the web/mobile banking - the "Remote Deposit" feature is laughably bush league. Like other banks who offer it, you take pictures of the front and back of the check. No problem there. But, they mandate specific words and phrases on the check, or else it will not be processed. I understand "for bank deposit only", but the full and specific phrase they require is much more than this, and not something the average person is going to remember every time they need to deposit, which means you have to remember to look it up every time. It is clearly not like an OCR system, where the check is scanned/read by computer. I'm left with the impression there's a person doing this transaction, and by the nature of the phrase, I'm guessing this is their "secure" method of ensuring someone isn't doing a double deposit. Its really pretty silly, and the onerous nature of it makes it less user-friendly.

I had high hopes for this place, and I want to like it, but the customer service and web access experience make it pretty poor. The thing is, for a small credit union, with only a small handful of locations, the way you distinguish yourself is with your customer experience and/or your ability to service customers from wherever they may be.
